Abstract Global wind intensity at 10 meters in meter per second (m/s) from MERRA for each year between 1985 year 2012 and the global average.

MERRA is a NASA reanalysis for the satellite era using a major new version of the Goddard Earth Observing System Data Assimilation System Version 5 (GEOS-5). The Project focuses on historical analyses of the hydrological cycle on a broad range of weather and climate time scales and places the NASA EOS suite of observations in a climate context. More information, including an FAQ and the file specification document that explains each of the products in detail, is available at the MERRA web site at the GMAO (

The "Wind intensity" field in the catalog is an annual mean of the global 10-m wind field produced each 6 h at the native resolution of 0.5° in latitude x 0.625° in latitude.

Annual mean values are available for each year from 1985 to 2012 as well as the global average for that period.
